Privacy policy

Smudge is an app for hiding names, numbers and faces in screenshots. It's made by Yoghurt Digital Ltd ("we"). The short version: your screenshots stay on your phone, we have no servers, and we don't collect anything about you.

Your screenshots

Smudge only opens the images you choose, through your phone's own photo picker or by sharing them to Smudge. All reading, detection and editing happens on your phone. Your screenshots, and the text in them, are never uploaded, sent to us or shared with anyone. When you share or save an edited image, it goes only where you send it.

To share or save an edited image, Smudge writes it to the app's private cache on your phone. Older copies are deleted automatically.

Text recognition

Smudge reads text using Google ML Kit, which runs entirely on your phone. ML Kit doesn't send your images or their text anywhere. It does send Google limited diagnostic information to keep the feature working well:

• device information, such as model and Android version;
• app information, such as app version;
• performance metrics;
• a per-installation identifier that isn't meant to identify you or your phone.

Purchases

Smudge is free. You can pay once to remove the watermark from exported images. Google Play handles the payment, so we never see your payment details. Smudge asks Google Play whether you've bought the upgrade and remembers the answer on your phone.

What we don't do

• No accounts or sign-in.
• No advertising, and no advertising identifiers.
• No analytics or tracking of our own.
• No selling or sharing of personal data.

Permissions

Smudge doesn't ask to read your photo library: the photo picker gives it only the image you choose. It saves edited images to your gallery when you ask. On Android 10 and older, that needs permission to write to storage. It doesn't use your camera, microphone, location or contacts.

Children

Smudge isn't directed at children under 13, and it doesn't knowingly collect data from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update this page and its effective date.
